Read a good book lately?

My son just finished reading The Red Badge of Courage. He mentions it several times a day, even tried to get me to read it. I grumbled that it was indeed good but I was familiar with it.

Regroup here: this is what I've wanted for several years, but he's not interested in my choices. So I'm halfway through, it's a quick read after all.

Does anybody have a suggestion for his next book? He (currently) says he likes war stories.

Not a war story, but any of the various Sherlock Holmes stories seem like a good read for teens.

Heinlein - Star Ship Trooper

Rand - The Virtue of Selfishness.

Steinbeck - The Pearl

Orwell - Animal Farm

Hemmingway - The Old Man and the Sea

He's in high school, right, Ken? Those should all go down well.

If you're going the sci-fi route but still with war theme--

Ender's Game and sequels. (this was big with teen boys here about 2 or 3 years ago).

Dune

Foundation (used to be trilogy, but I'm not sure how many there are now).

Much more recent-and totally freaky (I'd recommend you read this, Ken) is FEED.

On the slightly sweet, but still YA, ecology route--Hoot. (by Hiaasen)

Any thing by Chris Crutcher (sports themes, but very edgy).

"Pebbles in the sky" by Heinlein. I think the library has it. Sort of neat, combines young kids in a teleportation field trip gone wrong. Plenty of rough stuff, but with a lesson.
I'm starting the lad on "the secret history of Ghengis Khan" as my ambition for him is to be absolute ruler of a good slice of the known world.

I probably should have mentioned he's in the sixth grade, so some of the books are too adult for him. My bad. (Johnny Got His Gun is too adult for me.)

A lot of good suggestions, tho. Given my track record, I'll have him look them over.

Thanks, and if you think of others...

OH, 6th grade huh...then I suggest The Joy of Sex and a subscription to Playboy if you want to stay ahead of the learning curve. (:-))
